A doctor in the eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad says one protester has been killed and 10 wounded after shots were fired into a crowd of anti-U.S. demonstrators.
RFE/RL's Jalalabad correspondent reports the shots were fired on February 22 by members of the Afghan National Police trying to control a crowd angered by the reported accidental burning of copies of the Koran at NATO's Bagram Air Field.
At a Kabul protest on the same day, authorities said 11 people were wounded by shots fired at demonstrators who were trying to march on the city center.
A Reuters correspondent says live ammunition was fired at those demonstrators.
The United States has apologized over the Koran incident, calling it a mistake.
Staff at the U.S. Embassy in Kabul have been placed on lockdown.
